Christian perspective on these essential questions of what constitutes ethical behavior. In clear, straightforward language, Lovin discusses the nuances of ethical conduct within a Christian framework. For example, he points
out the centrality of rules, such as Gods commandments, to ethical conduct, but he also argues that simply adhering to rules is insufficient to create a quality life or deep
spirituality. This aspect of ethical conduct is developed via the goals that people set for themselves, and it is the balance that people achieve between rules and goals that establishes
the context of their moral life, as well as their character. Lovins discussion of the cultivation of virtues indicates that living a moral life is not simply following rules
and choosing appropriate goals, but also developing the character and qualities, that is, the virtues that define a righteous person, someone whom others can depend upon and who will inevitably
pursue ethical conduct because individuals have assimilated Christian principles and spirituality into their personal sense of identity. It has been pointed out that Christian ethics has long recognized that
evil frequently has been used to corrupt goodness and that a great deal of vice has involved a "perversion of virtue" (Birch and Rasmussen 46). Therefore, historically, Christian scholars, such
as Luther, have been wary of the virtues, regarding the quest for virtue as a path that can lead to self-righteousness, which is "only the smug and perverse side of
goodness" (Birch and Rasmussen 46). As this indicates, people will often act believing that they have the best of intentions and convinced that they are acting purely on Christian ethics.
