Violence and riots in prisons have been going on for hundreds of years. This essay reports some of the major prison riots over the centuries and decades. It discusses internal and external stakeholders and strategies to reduce violence. It ends with a comprehensive plan to reduce violence in prisons. Prison Violence Prison riots and violence is nothing new. The first recorded prison riot in this country occurred before the Declaration of Independence was signed. It was in the Newgate prison in Connecticut in 1774 (James, 2009). It has been estimated that more than 1,300 riots occurred in prisons during the 20th century. There have been some deadly riots in the history of American prisons. One was the Attica prison riot in 1971 during which more than 1,000 inmates held dozens of guards hostage (James, 2009). It was a demand for better conditions in the prison. Negotiations broke down between prison officials and prisoners and the guards finally used live ammunition and tear gas to forcibly take back the prison (James, 2009). During this incident, 32 inmates and 11 guards were killed. In 1980 there was a riot in a prison in New Mexico that took the lives of 33 inmates. This was a cruel action on the part of the inmates who used blow torches on their fellow inmates. In 1993, inmates took control of a prion Lucasville, Ohio.
