the measures to abide by the Kyoto Protocol and other environmental agreement s a regulations, such as Ecodesign Directive (2005/32/EC) which is removing incandescent light bulbs from the shelves of
shops in Europe due to their inefficiency in order to reduce environmental harm (European Report, 2009). One of the latest measures in the UK is an advert trying to
get drivers in the UK to simply drive 5 miles less each week. The usual suspects for creating carbon emission tends to be transport and the energy industries, however a
major contributor to the carbon emission in the UK, directly and indirectly, is the construction industry (Sarsby and Meggyes, 2009). The construction
industry is one that has a major impact on the overall levels of carbon emissions, with the choice of construction materials impacting on carbon emissions in terms of the costs
getting the goods to the site, the level of embedded carbon as well as the type and amount of waste that is generated. The materials that are used will also
have a longer term impact on the way ongoing use of energy will be undertaken during the life fo the building (Seager, 2007). It is estimated that half of
all the UKs carbon emission are the result of the use of energy for light and heat, more directly the production of the materials used in construction account for another
10% (Seager, 2007). When it is further considered that of the new building materials, where there are new build scenarios up to 20% of the materials ordered will become
waste and simply be thrown away, this represents an extremely high level of waste which represents a high level of carbon emission that have been created just to be wasted.
