residents and their families, the nursing staff, the administration and ultimately the public should be cognizant of this problem. The percentage of Americans needing nursing home care is increasing
as the population ages. Problems pertaining to the efficient care of nursing home residents are likely to escalate in the coming years. Therefore, the time to address them is now.
Reasons for frequent absenteeism for certified nursing assistant (CNA) staff members are obvious. Their work involves a high percentage of manual labor, i.e., lifting and cleaning, and their monetary
compensation is minimal. While residents pay a great deal of money in order to reside at the facility and receive care, this does not filter down as far as the
nursing aids who provide a great deal of the care that the residents are paying for. Baer (2006) cites poor administrative leadership in nursing homes as a leading cause
of a variety of problems encountered by nursing homes, including absenteeism. Nursing home supervisors and managers are generally selected on the basis of their performance in non-supervisory positions and
have "little or no training in fundamental management skills" (Baer, 2006, p. 60). As well as absenteeism, problems with managements relations with CNAs also cause increased turnover. According to
PayScale, Inc., the national average gross salary plus a benefits package that includes healthcare, 401k, and time-off expenses for a CNA is $33,120 (Baer, 2006). Research shows that the loss
of one CNA, when "recruitment, training, increased management expenses and lost productivity" are included, is four times the employees monthly salary or $11,040 (Baer, 2006, p. 60). As this indicates,
