whole, have been debated for centuries. Its not just our land that falls under the umbrella of property rights but also other property such as our wealth and even
less tangible property such as information. There has been a long-time clamor in the US in particular that property should be redistributed, that the wealthy should give up some
of their property to those that are less fortunate than them. This has, in fact, been implemented in the form of redistributive taxation which takes a greater percentage
of taxes from the wealthy than it does from those without the same level of economic footing. These taxes are then, in effect, redistributed. This occurs not just
in the form of the welfare programs which so many in our nation depend on but also in the form of financing our government and various infrastructural features such as
highways and national parks which wealthy and poor alike utilize but for which the wealthy pay a greater percentage of the upkeep.
To some, not surprisingly, redistributive taxation is unjust. In "Anarchy, State, and Utopia" libertarian philosopher Robert Nozick argues that our current system of redistributive taxation follows a
set pattern that is characterized by an inherent inequality between those that pay and those that benefit. Indeed, redistribution does occur from wealthy to poor. "As Nozick (226)
observes, however, "a recognition of peoples entitlements to their natural assets...might be necessary to avoid the stringent application of the difference principle which would lead...to even stronger property rights in
