narrator, who believes in recycling; Carol, a friend who is ambivalent about it; and her husband Tom who is antagonistic to the issue. "Oh, dont throw that bottle in
the trash, Carol," I told my guest. "Here, let me have it and I will throw in the recycling bin in the garage." "You recycle?" asked Carol. "I know I
should. But, Im such a creature of habit. I figure Im doing good if I manage to get trash into the garbage, much less sort it." Tom, Carols husband,
commented, "Isnt recycling rather pass?, as it has been figured out that it doesnt do what its suppose to do. I read that in many cities the cost of a
recycling program is more than these programs bring in revenue," said Tom (Zeller 83). "That doesnt make sense." "Thats a good point," I commented. "Even Matthew Hale, director of EPAs
Office of Solid Waste, says that they dont "want a large truck carrying around just a few bottles," as this would be a waste of resources (Zeller 83). However, Hale
also says that the majority of cities are getting better at reducing the costs involved in their recycling programs (Zeller 83). Everything that is bought, from a shrink-wrapped toy to
a medical device, entails an "energy-intensive history"; therefore, when that material is recycled, there are "tremendous Btu savings," according to Hale" (Zeller 83). "Why do we recycle?" asked Carol.
