Her distinguished character and impeccable charm extends far beyond her physical persona as the reader learns of her many suitors; however, Othello also condemns her to have "forsook so many noble matches, / Her father and her country and her friends" (Shakespeare PG), causing one to wonder if, perhaps, Desdemona not only represents a jewel or gem but also a bit of a tarnished one at that. In spite of the fact that Othello may hold opposing viewpoints on her virtue, Desdemona remains a pure and innocent soul who harbors guilelessness within her heart. Her father speaks of only the good his daughter portrays: "...a maiden never bold; / Of spirit so still and quiet, that her motion / Blushed at herself" (Shakespeare PG). After Iago has successfully divided Othello and Desdemona, without either of them aware, she ironically confides in him and requests his help to win back her lord. This particular exchange sheds considerable light upon the fact that she does, indeed, possess the traits of a jewel or gem, in that she is unable to utter the word "whore," even though she is otherwise quite forthright and courageous. Coupled with these admirable characteristics, Desdemona also harbors a significant moral sensitivity and love for her lord that overshadows any previous degradation, clearly establishing the fact that no matter what Othello thinks of her, her love for him will never wane.
