Through such powerful themes and elements there is also the strong presence of recurring imagery. The following paper examines recurring imagery in this play, focusing on sickness, madness, and death/murder.
Recurring Imagery: Hamlet In relationship to sickness there is not really any concrete illness so to speak, but rather a sickness that characters claim they possess in terms
of their hearts and being. For example, Laertes notes that he has a "very sickness in" his "heart" because of Hamlet and his sisters suicide, clearly a form of a
sickness (Shakespeare IV vii). There is also a moment when Hamlet speaks of Claudius "sickly being" when Hamlet has the opportunity to kill him but refrains (Shakespeare III iii). In
essence, the story plays out with many instances where people are suffering, in a position where they are seen as sickly and dishonorable, and sickness in relationship to insanity.
This presence of sickness of one kind or another seems to offer the emotional and spiritual foundations of the characters. They are individuals who are weak in some respects, harmed
in others, and ultimately people who are incredibly diverse and intricate. But, at the same time this presence of sickness, actually introduced in the very beginning of the play by
a character claiming he is "sick at heart," sets the stage for all the struggles that will take place (Shakespeare I i). It is the first step in death, murder,
and insanity. It illustrates to the reader or viewer that there is a weakness to the characters, that they are perhaps all sick in some way, mentally, soulfully, or physically.
It sets the stage as a tragedy and drama. Madness, or insanity, is something that seems to primarily afflict Hamlet and Ophelia.
