in whatever industry they operate is their reliance on employees. Some companies may perceive this reliance as greater where there are labour intensive tasks, and less important where there is
a high degree of automation. However, even where there is a minimised human input the employees are still key in the performance and operation of the company. Much has been
written about the way employers can manage employees, motivating them to higher performance levels, increase innovation and remain loyal. However, there is a vital issue that all employers should consider
before these issues of management the employment relationship; that is making sure that the most appropriate staff are recruited in the first place. An organization is most likely to
have an optimised performance level where they have the right employees in the right position. This does not mean that management the employment relationship and motivation issue are not important;
it means that they should be seen as part of the overall strategy that begins with the right recruitment process ensuring that appropriate staff are reemployed. Many theories
consider mass recruitment, or the recruitment of employees as a part of a large organisation, where there are large resources and experts can be drafted in to assess candidates. Iles
and Salaman (1995) note that the majority of these studies have considered the situation from the perspective of the personnel department and the industrial psychologist with little attention being given
to the recruitment of personnel from the organisational theorists and organisational psychologist which are also very valid perspectives and should be included in any consideration of the recruitment process. In
