II. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Exercise is the bodys lifeblood, no matter what age group. By starting early, children form healthful and positive patterns of exercise that ultimately carry them into adulthood. Indeed, the formative years are critical for both physical and mental development, with exercise playing an integral role in that formation. This is not to say that every individual is required to run five miles a day and bench press two hundred pounds as a means by which to get and stay in shape, but rather it is to state that even minimal exercising proves highly beneficial to the youths physiological and psychological well-being. One population in particular that is enriched by recreational exercise programs is the at-risk community, inasmuch as structure, development and discovery is critical to the social assimilation these individuals desire. At-risk youth face considerably more challenges than other kids, in that they have to struggle just to achieve a modicum of social acceptance. Their counterparts often unknowingly make them feel inadequate and worthless when it comes to achievement of any kind. Incorporating the level playing field of physical activity, such as basketball and other sports, serves to overcome the invisible boundaries that hamper social mainstreaming, as well as plays an integral role in developing an individuals sense of self.
