nation that was now one and was suffering from the bitter realities that were part of the Civil War. People were lost, angry, and confused as to what would happen
next. Lincoln understood that something needed to be done and he engaged in what we know today as Presidential reconstruction. This reconstruction period lasted from 1863-1867, during which time Lincoln
was elected for a second time. In his inaugural speech he offers a grief look at the reconstruction stating, "With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in
the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the wounds; to care for him
who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan - to do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace, among ourselves,
and with all nations." The goal of Presidential reconstruction was to acquire peace and stability in a very quick period of time. But, there were those who felt that
such peace and stability could only come through time. These individuals were known as those who implemented Congressional or Radical reconstruction which lasted from 1867-1877. The following paper first examines
how Presidential reconstruction was focused on rapid healing, and then discusses how Radical reconstruction was aimed at designing a nation that was focused on justice. The work used in this
