in the North, the economy of the South was in trouble as it had been based on slavery (PG). The economy in the South stagnated for quite awhile (PG). The
period of reconstruction, which followed the war was technically between the years 1865 and 1877 ("Reconstruction" PG). It was a time when the United States attempted to rebuild the South.
There were many questions which lingered after the war, including where the slaves would go and what they would do. What was their status? There were several legal remedies which
President Lincoln and the Congress chose to help things along for the freed slaves as well as for others who were trying to rebuild their lives. The war had been
very long and hard (Kleinfeld 24). The pressure of the Civil War also altered American values and elevated majority rule and equality which according to some was at the expense
of individual liberty and rule of law (24). Kleinfeld contends that the country went through a significant cultural and legal shift which had consequences for contemporary America (24). Kleinfeld suggests
that Lincolns actions actually resulted in the suspension of individual liberties (24). While President Lincoln defended law, liberty and the Constitution, he clearly moved into shaky territory
when he suspended individual liberties, and closed down anti-war and anti-administration newspapers (24). Not only did he do that, but he put dissidents into jail (24). Additionally, he suspended habeas
corpus, which gave more power to the president than any other individual in America before or ever since (24).Kleinfeld says " If Lincoln did not constitutionally have the power to
