THE MEDICINE MEN AND THEIR BELIEFS Based on two articles about shamans and the magic that they practice, both David Abrams in "The Ecology of Magic" and an article about Veer Bhadra Mishra and the now-polluted Ganges River, it would seem that while Shamans must change with the times and with technology, it becomes harder for their followers to accept it. There are problems in trying to reconcile technology and cultural traditions. Veer Bhadra Mishra comes from a family of spiritual leaders that have worshipped in the Ganges River since the 16th Century. Mishra, however, has had to modify the several-hundred year old tradition however as he cannot take a drink from the Ganges each morning as his forbears used to do as part of the ritual. The Ganges is too polluted and dangerous to drink. Mishra knows this and because of the changes in technology and culture in the past he has had to adapt to these changes. But while he admits he has had to change some things, in his heart he is, perhaps, doing exactly what he and those before him have always done: worship The Mother, as the Ganges is called. Mishra is also a hydraulic engineer and works daily to help get legislation passed to clean up and make safer the Ganges River. The culture has changed tremendously, as has technology. By becoming a hydraulic engineer and yet remaining a High Priest, Mishra is still performing the important religious ceremonies; and he is still protecting and worshipping The Mother: due to changes over time, ...
