Operating room lights are not categorized as consumable or disposable items in the same sense as are latex gloves or IV tubing, but the fact remains that they
need to be replaced periodically nonetheless. The high-intensity bulbs used in the operating room lose much of their brightness over time, leaving surgical teams to work in less than
ideal conditions. The decline in light quality occurs so gradually as to be largely imperceptible, yet it can carry greatly negative implications against which the hospital needs to protect
itself. Replacing operating room lighting is not as simple as merely changing light bulbs. Replacement bulbs are costly and difficult to handle,
and examination under the principles of management accounting reveals that given all costs and activities surrounding procuring either replacement bulbs or replacement systems, there is little difference in the costs
associated with replacing the entire system. A benefit of replacing the entire system is that systems are subject to continuous improvement efforts that the manufacture of replacement parts is
not. It is conceivable that the hospitals total cost for replacement parts would be nearly equal to replacing entire systems, for no net gain in the enhanced technology that
has emerged since the existing systems originally were placed into service. There are more reasons than only convenience for ensuring that each operating
room suite has the best lighting available at any given time: * Better patient outcome; * Greater surgical team productivity; * Enhanced energy efficiency; * Possible positive influence on the
hospitals insurance rates; and * Positive evidence in possible future negligence lawsuits. This last point is one that may not be required during
