original condition. The paper argues from a humanist perspective, rather than a technical one. Discussion Perhaps it was the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 that really was the start of
the project, because it was in 1913 that Congress passed the Raker Act, which gave the stricken city the right to build the OShaughnessy Dam (Pottenger, 2005). The idea was
to flood the Hetch Hetchy Valley in order to bring water and power to San Francisco, still trying to recover from the devastating quake (Pottenger, 2005). Unfortunately, that meant flooding
some of the most spectacular scenery in Yosemite, but apparently it was felt that the citys needs were more important. The dam was constructed, the valley was flooded, and protests
started immediately-and have never stopped. Today many groups, including the "Restore Hetch Hetchy" effort led by Ron Good, are working for the destruction of the dam and the restoration of
the valley to its original condition. There are many arguments that could be made in favor of this decision, but rather than take a scattershot approach to the issue, lets
concentrate on only two: first, that there are other, better ways for San Francisco to get its water than to use the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir; and second, that we are
stewards of the land and have been neglecting our duties. It is up to us to stop the rape of the environment and where possible, as it is here, we
