very similar identity. It is a story of many things and a story that leaves the reader ultimately guessing about race identity and the truth of a burden they both carry. The following paper examines elements of the story. Recitatif by Toni Morrison In reading this story the reader will generally side with the narrator because the reader is really only gaining their insight and their emotions and fears. They can empathize perhaps with the other character, Roberta, but it is Twyla, the narrator, who gains the confidence and emotional support of the reader in most cases. The story can make one feel uncomfortable for the two girls/women seem to become very different people as the story evolves and they come in contact through the years. It is also a story that can make a person uncomfortable in light of their own childhood memories and what may be truth or illusions. In essence, people want solid answers to their past, to events in their life but real life is not like that and one must ultimately live with their own perceptions and memories. This is what this particular reader felt when reading this particular story. In relationship to who these girls/women are it is interesting to note that, in truth, Morrison never reveals the race of the two characters although most people will assume that one is black and the other is white. One critic notes, for example, "While the characters and text are attentive to race and other issues of difference, it is impossible to tell which girl is white and which is African-American" (Holmes). Interestingly enough, the reader quickly assumes that one is African American and one is white, although realistically the reader could envision them as something other in relationship to race.
