Store, Inc. by P. Giltman 5/2010 Please Sociologists have studied criminal acts for centuries, but they have recently expanded
their research to try and understand recidivism and why former prisoners continue to break the law just to be rearrested. Typically, these criminals are committing non-violent misdemeanors such as theft,
assault or drug and alcohol abuse. As researchers gather a better understanding of mental illness and its ramifications, scientists are discovering that these individuals either do not have the ability
to learn or remember past mistakes or they simply lack remorse for their actions. Nevertheless, the statistics show that most prisoners find themselves right back in jail at one time
or another and for psychopathic criminals, the likelihood goes up even higher. As the number of crimes continues to increase and prisons reach maximum capacity, some penal systems are implementing
various rehabilitation methods to try and reduce the rate of recidivism. For example, one jail started teaching its inmates horticulture, which in fact lowered the prisons recidivism rate. However, most
inmates, when released, return to prison at some time in their life. Ironically, the likelihood of their return is higher three years after their release compared to one year after
their release. Researchers believe the emotional and physical suffering a prison receives in jail can have detrimental effects on their disposition causing them to devalue their life and the life
of others. In addition, because the burden of housing these prisoners falls on the taxpayer, recidivism rates are closely monitored by various agencies including mental health associations and the
