Americans that traditional base is conservative and fundamental religious teachings. As a consequence, the prominence (not necessarily the number and presence) of conservative and fundamental religious groups has increased.
As is the case with most social phenomena, the prominence of such groups is made more apparent in the contrast of the times. It can be contended, in
fact, that: Because of the dramatic move away from our conservative basis, because of the
increase in prominence of groups that differ from that conservative basis, we have become more aware of the upswing in interest regarding conservative and fundamentalist religions.
This contention can be analyzed in a number of ways. Two of the more applicable are approaching the
contention from a functionalist perspective and approaching it from a conflict theory perspective. Structural functionalism, of course, is an anthropological premise first founded by Radcliff-Brown and Evans-Pritchard. While
initially utilized to aid our understanding of Polynesian and African societies, the premise is now commonly employed on a much wider sociological scale to justify many aspects of culture from
many different time periods. Modern sociological theory, as defined by Emile Durheim, now looks on the structural functionalism theory as being useful in illustrating why certain sociological phenomena unfold
