works, offers up disasters of one kind or another in a natural process. The following paper looks at a natural disaster and a manmade disaster. The disasters are the recent
earthquake in China and the mine explosion in West Virginia. Recent Disasters in the World The recent earthquake that occurred in China, in April of 2010, was a
relatively large earthquake that did considerable damage. One author notes, "The epicentre of the first quake was located 235 miles south-south-east of Golmud" and measured 7.1 (Branigan; Meikle, 2010).
Ten minutes after the first quake there was another, one that measured 5.3, and then there was another, coming two minutes later, which measured 5.2 (Branigan; Meikle, 2010). Still yet,
another occurred that measured 5.8. It is believed that there actually 6 earthquakes that hit the region. Many of the houses in the area were constructed of wood and
mud and crumbled to the ground. There were people running from buildings and it was estimated that as many as 10,000 people were injured. At the time shortly after the
quake it was estimated that at least 400 people had died. The conditions were relatively dire as almost freezing temperatures at night left many people suffering and struggling to survive
and stay warm without their homes. There were many people attempting to dig out fallen buildings and dig through the dirt in the hopes of finding people alive, as is
always the case in such disasters. It seems that the number of deaths is primarily attributed to the poor housing construction, and not the quake itself as the quake was
