, 10/2010 --properly! It was once a common cultural conception that thoughts and reason came from the brain, while emotions came
from the heart, or in some cultures, "the gut". Modern science, of course, has shown reality to be otherwise. In fact, we have now identified the brain as the source
of all cognitive functioning, whether that functioning takes the form of reason, emotion, abstract thought, or anything else. Moreover, because scientists have developed the ability to observe brain function through
imaging technology, we have been able to get a good sense of what areas of the brain are connected to what areas of cognitive functioning. In other words, we now
understand that the origin of emotions involves some activity in the amygdala, that the recalling of memories is strongly associated with the neocortex, and so on. The idea that the
physiological structure of the brain plays a role in cognitive functioning is not new, however; its study dates back to the 1800s, and received a great boost by the famous
case of Phineas Gage, a railroad worker who survived a traumatic brain injury and became, for many at the time, irrefutable evidence for the localization of brain function in regards
to cognition. This paper will explore the brains role in cognition, how the case of Phineas Gage aided humanitys understanding of that role, and some recent challenges to the idea
of localized functioning. In this paragraph, the student is helped to give a broad overview of brain imaging technologies. The idea that the brain is connected to cognition really hit
