They question the rules implemented by those before them and they often get angry at injustices. They are individuals who are finding something they think is valid, and then they
stand up against the "establishment" with their ideals. The following paper examines the characteristics of a rebel as seen in the main character in John Updikes short story "A &
P." The paper then discusses whether this character has learned anything from his rebellious act. Rebel in "A & P" The young man in this particular story is
one who is intelligent. He is intelligent enough to see beyond what others consider "right" and "normal." This intelligence, coupled with depth, is what makes him see beyond the rules
and rebel against those rules. This intelligence can be seen in the way in which he observes, for people who lack depth and intelligence do not observe in the detailed
manner he observes: " She came down a little hard on her heels, as if she didnt walk in her bare feet that much, putting down her heels and then
letting the weight move along to her toes as if she was testing the floor with every step, putting a little deliberate extra action into it" (Updike). He is
also a young man who does not like to be told what to do, in terms of being looked down upon. This is first evident in the one customer, the
witch, who he claims would have been burned at the stake in Salem if she were born in a different time and place. He has no tolerance for such people
