entire picture. It does seem to be true that generally speaking Northern places are more expensive than those in the south and that Northern states or regions tend to be
more industrialized and have higher housing costs. To a large extent this is attributable to climate. However, there are other factors at work. Economists Stanley Engerman and Ken Sokoloff
explore factors influencing the different paths that North and South America had taken. According to the theorists, each of the regions contributed to different production and immigration patterns and levels
of inequality varied. The political structure of the two regions was different as well. The authors link inequality with industrialization. This is again something that seems to be common
in Northern and Southern regions. For example, one can get an apartment in the rural South for a few hundred dollars whereas the same square footage in New York City
might go for a few thousand. This is just a generalization. There are expensive places in the South and inexpensive places in the North. For example, at the very
Northern parts of New York State near Canada, homes are very inexpensive. Generally speaking however, and when it comes to the Northern and Southern American continents, there is a sense
