Discussion People often do things they know are bad for them: they eat too much, drink too much, engage in risky sexual behavior, and smoke. But smoking stands apart from the other behaviors because it is the one habit that cannot be done without others knowing about it. When a smoker lights up, everyone nearby smells it, and those closest to him have to breathe the smoke as well. Second-hand smoke is dangerous to non-smokers (children and infants are particularly at risk), and should be banned from public areas because there is no place for non-smokers to go to get away from the smoke. It is particularly difficult for non-smokers to enjoy restaurant meals when smokers light up; a "smoking section" is not enough, because the smoke and odors drift throughout the building. There is a great deal of evidence to support the claim that second-hand smoke is indeed harmful: "Constant exposure to environmental tobacco smoke - in the workplace or home - nearly doubles the risk of having a heart attack, according to a landmark study of more than 32,000 women" (Environmental tobacco smoke, 2005). This study found a "higher level of risk from passive smoking" than was found in other studies, and "provides the strongest evidence yet that exposure to smoke in the workplace is as dangerous as exposure at home" (Environmental tobacco smoke, 2005).
