in numerous sports and activities that put them at risk for injury or death. However, teenagers with epilepsy seem to be more prone to serious accidents. Although there are obvious
reasons why this may be so, questions arise. Why are adolescents with epilepsy more likely to get into serious situations that can be life threatening? One study examined accidents
and found that drivers with diabetes or epilepsy were at greater risk of automobile accidents than people without such disorders. Neurologist Phiroze Hansotia of Wisconsin discovered, along with his colleagues,
that diabetics and epileptics were 30% more likely to get into traffic accidents and 14% more likely to get tickets for moving violations such as running a red light, than
drivers who do not have those conditions ("Crash threat" 29). The study was controversial (29). Examiners did not do a controlled study but rather examined existent traffic records to glean
their results. This method is often criticized because there is no control group and other variables are not accounted for. Transportation department records were examined for the period covering 1985
through 1988 ("Crash threat" 29). The study first reported in the New England Journal of Medicine seems to provide important information for drivers who have these conditions but
it also leaves some questions unanswered; the analysis lumped diabetics and epileptics together and failed to identify specific factors, inclusive of the severity of the illness, as these could indeed
affect the likelihood of the tragedies occurring (29). The criticism is well deserved. Attention to the illness, and severity, both may play a role in terms of outcome. It
is true that, for example, a teenager with epilepsy who has a drivers license but secretly forgoes treatment may be at risk. In general, adolescents are risk takers. Some epileptics
