more information on using this paper properly! The poem Reapers by Jean Toomer creates a great deal of emotion in a short amount of time. In a stanza,
this prolific poet shares her pain with audiences of her day as well as with contemporary members. Today, however, it takes on a much more powerful meaning, though it may
have been more painful then when the words were all too familiar. Further, there is a message woven into the text. But it is through literary technique that Toomer is
able to accomplish this feat. The thesis of this paper is that in Reapers, Jean Toomer uses diction, tone and imagery to produce emotional effects and meanings. Jean Toomer was
a Harlem Renaissance writer who was born at the end of the nineteenth century and lived to see the 1960s. It is important to understand that she had passed away
before the end of the civil rights era. She did not see all it accomplished. While this work was written long before that time, there are messages sent which apply
to an era gone by as well as to the present time. The poem begins "Black reapers with the sound of steel on stones Are sharpening scythes " (Toomer PG).
Immediately, there is a sense that the poet uses diction well in order to create an immediate sense of place. One can only visualize the event due to the diction
but tonality and imagery play a part. This is true even in looking at the first sentence. One gets a sense of the extent of her talent immediately. The
