in a stream-of-consciousness style, it details one day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway and gives the reader insights into her thoughts and memories as she makes preparations for a party. This paper discusses the realization of her character and that of Lucrezia Smith, wife of Septimus Warren Smith. Discussion The action of the novel takes place entirely on one day, some time in June 1923, and culminates with the party in the evening. "Unifying the whole is the consciousness of Clarissa Dalloway which is linked to that of Peter Walsh, which reveals Clarissa and her life from a different point of view, and also to that of the shell-shocked Septimus Warren Smith which reveals the dark side of her mind" (McNichol). Thus Septimuss wife Lucrezia can also be seen as part of the darker side of Clarissa. Much has been made of the opening line of the book being the work of a confident author who knows how to engage an audience. Woolf writes, "Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself" (Woolf 3). That innocuous beginning tells us that the character is married, and that she is wealthy enough to have servants; we can even speculate that it will be a treat for her to do this errand for herself rather than having someone do it for her. A few lines later we read "What a lark! What a plunge!" (Woolf 3). Indeed, this is a treat for Clarissa, a way to escape and be on her own for a few minutes at least. As she walks through the streets of London, something she loves to do, she thinks of Peter Walsh, the man she refused to marry, and convinces herself for the umpteenth time that she was right in refusing him (Woolf).
