Our society is facing a very formidable enemy when it comes to substance abuse. Individuals can be addicted to alcohol, illicit drugs, or
even prescription drugs. They can also react very differently in response to their addiction. Likewise, treatment possibilities for substance abuse vary greatly. One of the more intriguing
of those treatment possibilities is reality therapy. Alcoholism and other types of drug addictions impact not just those that suffer from the
disease but also their relatives. Drug abuse is associated with a lowered standard of living, numerous health impacts, increased violence in the family, a higher propensity for divorce, and
many other problems. Addiction can be caused by either a physical or psychological dependence on drugs (Hanson 57). Addiction is
distinguished from terms such as "substance abuse" in that addiction is substance dependence (Hanson 57). A users addiction is evidenced by "continuous use despite significant substance-related problems known to
the user (Hanson 57)". There is no way to predict which families will suffer from the direct and indirect impacts of
