components, not the least of which includes focusing on the present and leaving behind issues of the past; avoiding discussion of symptoms and complaints since they draw the client back into the problem instead of the solution; embracing total behavior by changing the way a client acts and thinks; avoiding criticism, blame or complaining from both counselor and client; being non-judgmental and non-coercive from the counselors perspective; discouraging excuses; making specific, workable plans; and being patient and supportive to aid the clients ability to reconnect (The William Glasser Institute, 2005). Glassers Choice Theory is one of myriad approaches to instilling the ability to connect through the cognitive development of responsibility and self-discipline. Cornerstone to Glassers (1999) theory for the benefit of reality therapy is the notion that people behave certain ways given their particular circumstances; these behaviors, however, are all motivated by the choices made by each individual. Moreover, human beings harbor the need to fulfill five fundamental needs, including survival, power, fun, freedom and love/belonging. Together, these elements constitute the reasons why, for example, some clients are more readily able to change behaviors while others are fraught with struggle. According to Glasser (1999), people often disconnect from the world around them when things become too much of a challenge, with much of that disconnection stemming from one of the Seven Deadly Habits (criticizing, blaming, complaining, nagging, threatening, punishing, bribing or rewarding to control) that sabotage the desired success being sought.
