In Mark Twains The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and Henry James The Real Thing the reader can see both realists and what may be referred to as insiders,
people who are not realists. The following paper examines some of the characters in each story, illustrating how some are realists and some are insiders. Realists: Mark Twain
and Henry James In Twains story the characters seem perhaps almost too good, too colorful, to be true. But, one could well argue that there are such colorful people and
that they are therefore real. But, this does not mean that they are realists. For example, the character of Simon Wheeler seems to be an insider and a character who
loves a good tale, often embellished and thus not real. In fact the story is ultimately told by him and in light of this one could well argue that none
of the characters are realists because Wheeler, with no comprehension of what realism is, could not present realist characters. However, putting aside this fact there are some, such as Smiley,
who seemed something of a romantic and opportunist, but also, in those same respects, a realist. Wheeler describes him stating, "Well, Smiley kept the beast in a little lattice box,
and he used to fetch him down town sometimes and lay for a bet" (Twain). Smiley was a character who would trick others and come out on top in many
ways, and in that one could argue he was a realist because he understood how people thought and worked. In James story it is interesting to note that the
painter, who is also the narrator and remains unnamed, is one who is seeking realism in people he wishes to paint. Because he wants realism one could argue that he
