began during the late nineteenth century, when European novelists began tiring from the romanticism which had permeated most of the popular works of the day, such as the novels of
Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters (Chambers realism.htm). The desire to write about the world and people as they really are, rather than as we wish they would be
quickly became the style of choice in America as well. Soon, authors as diverse as folksy Mark Twain and the aristocratic Henry James adopted the realistic style as their
own (Chambers realism.htm). Henry James was one of an increasing number of American artists who spent much time traveling in Europe. He recognized the many cultural differences between
strict European etiquette and American less conventional social attitudes. During the mid-to-late nineteenth century, there was a visible antagonism between American socialites living abroad and the American tourists traveling
in Europe, as the expatriates embraced strict social conformity and disdainfully regarded their countrymen as vulgar. The culture clash between America and Europe is the premise of Henry James
1877 realistic novel, Daisy Miller. The novel is set in Vevey, Switzerland, a town which James was obviously quite familiar. His vivid description could serve as a travel brochure
for the tiny haven for the worlds most socially-prominent families: "There are, indeed, many hotels, for the entertainment of tourists is the business of the place, which, as many travelers
will remember, is seated upon the edge of a remarkably blue lake--a lake that it behooves every tourist to visit... In this region, in the month of June, American travelers
are extremely numerous; it may be said, indeed, that Vevey assumes at this period some of the characteristics of an American watering place. There are sights and sounds which
