Acme Regional Medical Center continues to struggle with the realization that it should gain more capability from its information technology (IT) systems but remains at a loss as to the best approach to identifying and solving its information-related problems. Virtually all care providers in all capacities complain that information is not complete enough and that the quality of patient care suffers as a result. Acmes "Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is confident that many of the problems could be alleviated if healthcare professionals were better able to access and leverage information systems anytime, anywhere, and preferably nearest to the point of patient care." The purpose here is to evaluate the problem and to demonstrate other hospitals approaches to the same issues. Relevant Technology Solutions Though it can take many apparent shapes, the primary underlying problem is twofold: (1) collection of new information is cumbersome and (2) Acme is not making efficient use of the patient data it currently collects. Real-time database applications can provide the operational solution, and wireless technologies can streamline the process of collecting new data while also enabling health care providers to operate more efficiently. With the use of real-time applications, patient records are updated instantly as information is added to them. Thus the physician making rounds has immediate access to results of lab tests completed an hour prior to his visit with the patient as well as the vital signs recorded by the nurse only 20 minutes (or 1 minute) earlier.
