of literature, from realistic depictions of war to graphic novels, all of it interesting and some of it utterly fantastic. The range of novels considered seems to work best as
"alternative realities"-they take readers to places they couldnt visit in real life, such as the secret second Moon of Earth; or to Vietnam, or to a quasi-real Colombia in which
murder is justified by honor. Although an earlier observation was that novels allow readers to put themselves into stories, most of these books seem to be the type of works
where readers would rather observe than take part. Nobody wants to go back to Vietnam, or to Nazi Germany. What lasts and what doesnt? All of the books on
the list seem to be important enough or written well enough to have enduring appeal. Three that will definitely last are The Things They Carried, Haroun and the Sea of
Stories, and Maus. The Things They Carried will endure because it tells of the Vietnam War, one of the watershed events in U.S. history, from the point of view of
the ordinary "grunt." This isnt General Westmorelands detached view of things consisting of the observations and pronouncements he made from the safety of Saigon; its the real-life slog of the
guys out in the field, the ones who took the chance of dying every time they went on patrol. The title refers to the contents of their packs, and in
telling us what they carried, Tim OBrien also tells us who they were and what was most important to them: comfort, love, drugs, booze. Its a brilliant device for letting
us know what life was really like for the combat troops in Nam, from their point of view, and for that reason it will last. Maus will last too, but
