This paper explains why and how technology helps children learn to read in the classrooms of today. TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES Now more than ever before the use of technology in the classroom is being utilized even for the younger grades. The use of computers and specialized software is being used to teach and enhance reading skills to elementary school children. The use of specialized digital software is available that allows students to create their own books, which helps their reading skills. When given an assignment in class each student then creates their own digitized book that tells a story about that problem. This gives an excellent overview of their comprehension rate, their reading and language skills and serves as further experience to enhance their abilities to put together and to organize their thoughts on a given subject (Wilkerson 2001). MORE THAN JUST READING SKILLS States one teach who uses reading technology in her classroom, "My goals for my students with regard to improving their reading and literacy abilities are to increase problem solving and critical thinking proficiency, encourage the use of writing skills to communicate with others, and improve research capabilities," says Wall. "Though many of these goals require planning and preparation, I feel that it is the use of technology in the spontaneous, `teachable moment that can be the most rewarding" (International Reading Association 2001, 10).
