difficulty sitting still and maintaining his focus in class, as he would rather be outside. Therefore, he learns slowly and with difficulty. In their video, "Fluency," Drs. Donald Bear
and Richard Allington indicate that struggling readers need a book that is not difficult or too easy. Therefore, for my fluency evaluation of Noahs reading, I chose The Very Hungry
Caterpillar by Eric Carle, because I hooped that reading about a subject found in the natural world would grab his interest and attention and this proved to be the case.
This is a large picture book with brightly colored illustrations and only a few words per page, which should not seem overwhelming to the struggling first grade reader. Before
beginning the reading, I talked to Noah about caterpillars, and how caterpillars look something like a worm when they are born, but then change totally over the course of their
lifetimes. Noah seemed intrigued and curious about what this transformation might entail. While Noah has had nearly a full academic year of instruction in reading, his first reading
of the first page was staccato in character, with Noah coming to a full stop after nearly every word. Using a copy of the text, I utilized the marks suggested
by Dr. Bear to indicate where Noah paused and for how long, one slash for each second and after waiting 3 seconds I supplied the word, counting it as an
error (Allington and Bear, 2012). Dr. Allington indicates that students who read without fluency, that is, in the staccato monotone that is characteristic of struggling readers, are unlikely to
