Just a few of the strategies they may use to increase their understanding is paraphrase the text, go back through the text for clues or go forward to see if something will clarify the text they dont understand. Readers also use "graphic and semantic organizers." This provides an illustration of the relationships between and among concepts that are presented. When they draw out the connections between and among ideas or concepts, they can see a picture of the interrelationships. They basically provide a map to the text. These types of organizers are also beneficial when students need to summarize text. Answering questions helps to improve text comprehension. Research demonstrates the answering questions gives students a purpose to read the selections, they help the student focus on the lesson, the help students think actively, and they support having students monitory their own comprehension. One type of question helps students learn the relationship between the question and where in the text they can find the answer. Questions can help students understand both implicit and explicit information in the text. This type also helps the student learn scriptal information, which is the knowledge or information that is not included in the text at all but is instead, related to knowledge they already have. When students generate their own questions, they are more actively involved in the process of reading and what they understand. They must be aware of whether or not they know the answer when they generate a question. Students are more aware of how information in one part of the text relates to another part of the text.
