level. The next assessment of Johns reading ability was the Informal Reading & Spelling Vocabulary assessment from St. Judes Tutoring School (2005). An informal reading inventory is one that has
graded passages or graded lists of words that students are asked to read. Strengths and weaknesses can be learned from these types of assessments. Also, the strategies students use to
decode or identify words can be identified. The assessment is comprised of lists of 20 words for each grade level Kindergarten through Grade 10 (St. Judes Tutoring School, 2005).
The lists were used to assess word recognition. Each word on the lists for grades K, 1, 2 and 3 were clearly written separately on 3 X 5 index cards.
Words were written with black marking pen in block print, much like the print found in books for this grade level. This assessment was administered by the special education resource
teacher. This allowed John to be assessed in a private setting during the regular school day. Based on this assessment, Johns independent reading level is grade 1. The instructional level
is grade 2 and his frustration level is grade 3. John has poor word attack skills and does not know the sounds of many combinations. The examiner observed that John
gets frustrated easily and wants to give up. At the same time, John wants to read books. Also available were the Stanford 9 Achievement Test scores from the previous year.
This test provided standardized scores. Johns scores on reading were mostly at the first grade level, which classifies John as a nonreader in the third grade. The teacher assigned John
to the Reading Recovery program. Reading Recovery is designed for the earliest intervention in the first grade (Grabmeier, 2004; Feret, 2001), however, it is an appropriate program for young nonreaders.
