enormous and the book is almost always more intriguing and fulfilling, because authors have the time to explore their themes in depth, something that filmmakers cannot do. Even the most
fascinating movie begins to lose its audience when it creeps up on the three hour mark, which is why most films are only two hours long or less. But a
book can keep a reader entertained for days or weeks at a time. In addition, a reader dips into literature when he has the time; he does not have to
rearrange his schedule to get to a theater-he can grab the book and read a few pages when its convenient, and it doesnt disrupt an entire evening. But the
biggest drawback between the two is probably the fact that character development is almost always sacrificed in favor of action sequences. Todays movie audience is very young (studios aim their
products at teenage boys), which explains the plethora of car chases, gross sex and toilet jokes that seem to drive many of todays films. Its understandable that in todays fast-paced
world, where everyone has a cell phone, a blackberry, an IPOD or other electronic device that keeps them constantly plugged in, audiences dont have the patience to watch a film
unfold slowly and with care. That is a shame, because when films delve into character and do it well, its a revelation. The camera can show us things that weve
only imagined before, and give us a new image to replace the one we formed when we read the book. A well-crafted film can enhance the entire entertainment experience. Fortunately,
it seems that that is what happened with One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest. One of the biggest changes between the film and the novel is that the Chief is
