Georges film, Hotel Rwanda. This paper discusses the film, gives a reaction to it and answers several questions about the issues it raises. Discussion The movie concerns the efforts of hotel proprietor Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle) to save Tutsis who had taken refuge in his hotel. At first unable and unwilling to believe the extent of the slaughter, Rusesabagina gradually accepts the magnitude of the genocide and finally, takes a stand against it (Taylor, 2004). Rusesabagina is smart, sophisticated and knowledgeable-he particularly knows the games and bribes that are necessary to keep a four-star hotel running (Taylor, 2004). It is his skill as a hotelier, along with his network of Tutsi contacts that enables him to keep the refugees safe until they are finally escorted out of danger by a UN convoy (Taylor, 2004). But until that moment, no one is safe, and the film generates nerve-wracking suspense since the audience knows that literally no one is safe from the marauding Hutu murderers, who drag entire families into the street and kill them (Taylor, 2004). The refugees in the hotel are waiting for the UN to help them, but when the head of the U.N. peacekeeping forces, Colonel Oliver, a Canadian (Nick Nolte) arrives, its not to help the Tutsis, but to evacuate the Europeans (Taylor, 2004). Oliver, a decent man whose hands are tied by regulations, erupts in rage: "You should spit in my face," says Colonel Oliver to Paul. "Youre dirt. We think youre dirt, Paul ... The West, all the superpowers ... They think youre dirt. They think youre dung ... Youre not even a nigger. Youre African" (Taylor, 2004).
