Its very hard to watch the waste of potential shown here. This paper is a brief reaction to the film. Discussion The video is an ethnography, meaning a study of
one group by people outside that group. Since the film is about Chicago street gangs, the first thing a viewer is likely to wonder is how the filmmaker, Dwight Conquergood,
got this close to his subjects. They obviously trust him enough to talk to him, and to let him on their activities. The answer to this point lies in the
fact that Conquergood didnt remain an outsider: ""He would move into communities, particularly those of the disenfranchised, such as the Latin Kings ... and not only study them but become
an advocate for these people" (Dwight Conquergood, 2004). The gang portrayed here, the Latin Kings, saw him as their champion, since he often accompanied gang members to the ER or
helped them get back into school (Dwight Conquergood, 2004). Despite being robbed and mugged more than once, Conquergood kept going back, and in doing so, earned the gangs respect. The
film itself is a compelling experience, because it "puts a human face on street gangs" (Paul, 1992, p. 139). It can be argued that adolescence is a time of life
that skews peoples thinking. People the age of the Latin Kings have a terrifying illusion of immortality-teenagers never truly believe theyre going to die. They are also not old enough
yet to understand that present actions can have consequences in the future; a casual sexual encounter today can leave a person with AIDS that wont appear for ten years. They
are also incapable of understanding that the issues that are of great importance when they are 14 are laughable at 24; everything is a tragedy for kids in their teens,
