New York forces some people to live it, those who feel they need to take on the city and win. This paper is a reaction to Wolfes novel. Discussion
The book is ostensibly about Sherman McCoy, a Wall Street bond trader, but its really an examination of New York, and of an even larger subject, human nature, though the
lens of McCoys life. McCoy is pulling down a million dollars a year in his job, but he is, in effect, nothing more than a salesman, a fact that doesnt
seem to have occurred to him. What does occur to him - and what comes through to the reader - is that McCoy has a sense of entitlement. He and
his wife Judy live in a 14-room apartment (that alone would burn through the million) that Wolfe describes as having a deep green marble floor that goes "on and on";
a walnut stair case thats five feet wide and sweeps up "in a sumptuous curve" to the upper floor (Wolfe 10). The place is the type of apartment "the mere
thought of which ignites flames of greed and covetousness under people all over New York and, for that matter, all over the world" (Wolfe 10). But all McCoy wants to
do is get out of the place for a few minutes; in fact, he wants to go and see his mistress, and hes wrestling with the dog, Marshall, about getting
into his leash so they can leave (Wolfe). In fact, McCoy is going broke on a million dollars a year because the apartment is far too big; he took
out a loan to buy it and its costing a quarter million a year to pay it back; and yet he doesnt want to move because the place is fabulous
