U.S. policies addressing the transporting of illegal drugs and illegal immigrants often override human compassion. American capitalism is now powering most global economies, but for the countries of the
Third World (now labeled by the more politically correct term developing nations), this wealth is concentrated in the hands of the few rather than the many. For those like
17-year-old Maria Alvarez and her friend Blanca, the drug trade is the only opportunity to generate anything remotely resembling a decent income for Colombians, who on the average earn less
than $2,000 a year. When drug traffickers go looking for prospective mules or couriers to transport heroin pellets to a receptive and highly lucrative U.S. underground market, they prey
on those barely hanging on to the lowest rung of the socioeconomic ladder. In Maria, they have the perfect mule. As a female, she is treated particularly harshly by
a patriarchal sociopolitical order in which women have few if any rights under the law. Being pregnant, she would be the perfect mule to travel from Bogota to New
York because no one would dare X-ray a pregnant woman. Of course, by ingesting the 62 heroin pellets, she is also endangering the life of her unborn child.
For Maria, this trip symbolizes a religious journey, as revealed in the films title, which refers to the Roman Catholic prayer that includes the line, "Hail Mary, full of grace."
