person is little more than a "token." This paper analyzes an article that discusses diversity in the media. Discussion The article appeared in Electronic Media which is now known as
Television Week; it appears weekly and discusses the television industry. In "Bringing Minorities into the Fold," Karissa Wang discusses the fact that NBC was awarded the "highest marks among the
major networks for diversity" (Wang, 2001, p. 2). The effort to increase diversity in NBC employees was spearheaded by Paula Madison, the General Manager of KNBC-TV; she is also NBCs
"vice president of diversity" (Wang, 2001, p. 2). The article describes how the network has attempted to reach out to neglected population groups, in this case, Native Americans (Wang,
2001). At the press conference regarding the award, Sonny Skyhawk, who is president of an organization called "American Indians in Television," noted "We as a people happen to be the
first inhabitants in this hemisphere and, unfortunately, the last to be recognized by the networks" (Wang, 201, p. 2). After taking the job as vice president of diversity, Ms. Madison
went after Native Americans in particular, asking Skyhawk how they could increase participation and promising to visit the community (Wang, 2001). Skyhawk was "stunned. He replied, Youd go there?" (Wang,
2001, p. 2). The result of this conversation was a trip to the two reservations in South Dakota, Rosebud and Wounded Knee, and "visits to a college on each reservation"
(Wang, 2001, p. 2). Madison said that it was NBCs purpose to "develop a relationship so when the time came, we could establish a relationship with the tribal colleges and
