He had an inclination to write with brevity and intensity and was known for writing short stories. It was thought that he concentrated on writing short stories and
poems because the short story and/or poem could be written and read in one sitting. This may not have been his preference from a creative sense, but because he
started his career juggling working with writing, it was what fit in his life style. Carvers subject matter often included experiences of blue collar workers and may have been
a reflection of his own life which included bouts with alcoholism and recovery. SHORT CUTS/A COLLECTION OF NINE SHORT STORIES AND ONE POEM Carvers writing style and themes are very
similar to those of Ernest Hemingway, Anton Chekhov and Franz Kafka. Carver, himself, described his writing style as being influenced by referred to Isaac Babel, Frank OConnor and V. S.
Pritchett. (Wikipedia Contributors, 2006). Chekhov, however, seems the greatest influence, motivating him to write Errand, one of his final stories, about the Russian writers final hours (Wikipedia Contributors, 2006). Raymond
Carvers collection of short stories, aptly named "Short Cuts" may have become his most well-known book because this collection of stories became the basis for a movie which was directed
by Robert Altman of the same name. Many believe that this collection of short stories is an example of Carvers writings when he was at his best.
Carver was a master at capturing the odd and interesting idiosyncrasies of human behavior that exist in the everyday randomness of lifes experiences. He illustrates the plight of the
