For stage plays, it has been said that human interaction and characterization is at the heart of any successful piece of theatre. This being the case, Dakin Matthews "The Savannah
Option" is an excellent example of the capacity of a play to convey complex truths about intricately human characters who take on the full dimensions of life as a result
of their nuanced interactions. This paper will explore the characterization that occurs in "The Savannah Option" with an eye towards understanding the conflict between the two main characters. This paragraph
helps the student present an overview of the play. In order to understand the manner in which the play imbues its characterization with true human qualities, a brief summary overview
of the play and the context the characters find themselves in is in order. The story is about a poetry professor at the University of Savannah named Manuel Perry whose
wife is dying of cancer; consequently, he begins spending time with his wifes colleague and friend, biology professor Emilia Balestreri. Given that the two of them hail from extremely polarized
disciplinary backgrounds, they enjoy debating each other in regards to the merits of their respective philosophies. Over time, it becomes apparent that the content of their arguments is less about
the specific topics they are addressing and more about their own developing feelings for one another and why it would be a mistake to act upon them. The play presents
cultural and philosophical reasons for the two to avoid falling into an affair, but ultimately these are exposed as rationalizations. The two characters would have a hard time of it
