goals. Business owners and managers, understandably, want to make the most possible within their own frameworks and when look at scientific management and classical organisation theory it can be argued
the central themes to both of these has been rationality, efficiency and standardisation. To consider if this is accurate we can look at the way these schools of through have
developed and been put into practice. The founder of scientific management is seen as being Frederick Winslow Taylor, a perfectionist who hated waste of any sort. Taylor argued that
even though tasks had been broken down into component parts by the time he was undertaking his work following the industrial revolution workers still retained discretion on how to perform
tasks. This discretion, he argued, gave the workers power and those workers with this discretion would under work and use the control which they gained to their own advantage (Huczyniski
et al, 2003). This was possible as management remained ignorant of the processes involved. To regain control management needed to understand the process and be able to control the processes
so that the most efficient methods were used. Taylors theories were designed to put management in control, designing, using scientifically measured
studies these, the most efficient work methods and then organising the and controlling workers to ensure maximum efficiency (Huczyniski et al, 2003). Job design would involve the standardisation procedures and
tools, then the one best method would be dictated to the most suitable employee, should perform the task in their machine like manner. The well known case is that of
Ford, where cars were produced on mass and production was increased dramatically, but looking at other aspects of the work that developed scientific management the concepts of rationalisation, standardisation and
