study of knowledge) and metaphysics (the study of the fundamental reality from which all others derive). This paper explores the evolution of rationalism from these beginnings and some of its
most important proponents. Discussion Epistemology is the study of knowledge, but not in the sense of book learning; its the study of how we know what we know. This seems
almost childish, until one really thinks about it, then it becomes overwhelming. Consider a very simple question: why do we all agree that grass is green? That means that the
entire human race has agreed on what grass is, what a color is, what the color green is, and why it should be applied to this particular flora. But where
does all that come from? To take a much more serious example, how do we know that God exists? How do we know what intelligence is? The questions that
epistemology struggles with are those that define what it means to be human. Epistemology covers a vast scope and is usually considered in conjunction with metaphysics, logic and psychology (Runes,
1959). Epistemology can be defined differently depending on how it is being examined, but "[W]hichever usage is adopted, epistemology as the philosophical theory of knowledge is one of the two
main branches of philosophy" (Runes, 1959, p. 94). The other is metaphysics. Runes defines metaphysics as the "science of being as such"; that is, the study of being as being,
