man is Raskolnikov and he is the protagonist of the story despite the fact that he committed murder. He is a complex character who is essentially good but feels that
he must commit the murder of an individual for some righteous cause. He is torn about his plans and all but makes himself completely insane in struggling with himself. Near
the beginning of the novel we have Raskolnikov experiencing a dream that not only seems to foreshadow what will happen, but also seems to offer us insight into the complex
nature of Raskolnikov, and perhaps the complex nature of man. The following paper analyzes this dream, first as it relates to the his own turmoil and the foreshadowing of events
and then as it relates to the character of Raskolnikov and the character of mankind. Turmoil and Foreshadowing One of the first elements of the dream that this
particular felt was important was the scene wherein the young boy clings to his father as the drunks always frighten him: "There was always a crowd there, always shouting, laughter
and abuse, hideous hoarse singing and often fighting. Drunken and horrible-looking figures were hanging about the tavern. He used to cling close to his father, trembling all over when he
met them" (Dostoevsky 54). These figures, the darkness, can easily represent the turmoil within Raskolnikov. His thoughts and plans are dark and frightening, especially if we imagine him as a
somewhat likable and compassionate person. He feels incredibly vulnerable to these thoughts of murder, and they are represented by the drunks, the darkness, the loud and incessant voices. In
addition the path that he and his father are on, which begins with the darkness, quickly turns to the cemetery which also offers us insight into his turmoil. With the
