the most problematical of Hawthornes works. Certainly, it is evident that Rappaccini himself is presented in an almost totally negative light, at least in relation to Beatrice. Although his superiority
as a scientist is acknowledged, as can be seen from Baglionis comments, his use of his daughter and, later, Giovanni as experimental subjects is constantly criticised throughout the narrative.
Beatrice, on the other hand, is presented in a much more positive light. Hawthorne
stresses her beauty, her innocence and her modesty, the latter being symbolised not only by her physical isolation from the world but also her deprecation of her own scientific reputation:
when Baglioni suggests that she is already qualified to fill a professors chair, this is soon refuted by Beatrice herself, when she says that despite her lifelong familiarity with the

isolated as a result. In many ways, it is the men
in the narrative who can be considered as sinful, rather than Beatrice herself. Rappaccini, who would distil his own heart in an alembic in the pursuit of the perverted wisdom
of empiricism, uses his daughter and later Giovanni solely for experimental purposes, although even Baglioni concedes that he does less mischief than might be expected with his study of poisons.
