Essay / Research Paper Abstract
An 18 page paper discussing changes in design for manufacturing. Prototyping increasingly translates not to the production of a physical sample, but to solid assessment for manufacturability and product function in a fully virtual environment. The key is to speed the process between design and market to the shortest cycle length possible. Several manufacturing and supply chain changes have been instrumental in contributing to this shortened cycle; rapid prototyping is one of the most significant on the list. Despite all the changes seen only within the past decade, it is likely that the coming ten years will provide even further refinements and usefulness. Bibliography lists 16 sources.

in manufacturing today is to get the product to market as quickly as possible. While one manufacturer is bogged down in design, another is testing the manufacturing process.
Still another is launching the product, gaining competitive advantage over all of its competitors. There have been many enhancements to the design and
testing phases, not the least of which is rapid prototyping. The ultimate goal of rapid prototyping is to eliminate the need for it altogether. Through varying approaches to
computer aided design (CAD), several types of organizations have indeed been able to move on to the most rapid prototyping of all, that which is done only virtually and produces
no physical sample. Todays Business Environment That this is the digital age is a given,
but we have arrived at a juncture at which technological advances have slowed and we are more fully able to digest the myriad possibilities resident in current technology while planning
for future advances. In addition, the current state of business dictates that we take full advantage of the technology available to us. Business is more competitive than at
any time in the past, a trend that is only expected to continue for the next several years. Competitive advantage is a quality that every organization needs to strive
to attain and is even more critical in the global arena than on a national or regional scale. As competition increases, the need
for speed is more critical as well. Design engineers no longer have the luxury of taking several years to add new products and features to the pipeline, and the
