exciting. This work created around 1504 or 1505 sits in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Smith, 2006). It was a gift from J.P. Morgans estate and was contributed to the museum in 1916 (Smith, 2006). However, this is one piece that actually remained in situ for awhile but in 1678 it would go to the Roman Colonna collection ("The Metropolitan Museum of Art," 2006). A bit earlier, it was actually sold to the Queen of Sweden, but one of the panels of this altarpiece does appear in the museum at hand ("The Metropolitan Museum of Art," 2006). Indeed, MOMA would receive this gift from a wealthy American, despite the fact that its origins are tied to European history. On one hand, the piece strikes an emotional cord because of the religious subject matter. Anyone who is religious will identify with the fact that there are saints present and that the Madonna and child also symbolize these relationship between mother and son, and that is moving. This colorful work of art was painted using oil on gold (Smith, 2006). The picture is composed with the Madonna and child at the center of the piece. There are halos around all of the figures included, with the exception of the two children. There is a little boy sitting on the Madonnas lap and another child who is old enough to stand on his own. She is surrounded, as demonstrated by the title, by Saints. Two male and two female saints are depicted. The painting is quite symmetrical as there are two saints on each side, and each side demonstrates the existence of a male and female saint.
